After months (OK, maybe years) of anticipation, the next installment in the most iconic franchise in film history, The Last Jedi, hit theaters on Thursday.Finn met Rose, Poe met Vice Admiral Holdo. The director telegraphed many scenes only to turn on that telegraphed expectation at the last minute as another gotcha. That happened throughout the movie and started to get old. Then there was the serious plot holes. The fleet is running out of fuel, but the first order doesn't just jump ahead of the fleet and surround them. I think every character in the bar scene in episode 4 deserves their own spinoff. The one on tattooine. Start with Greedo IMO.

That scene was just one minor symptom of what was wrong with the film. A lot of things felt awkward and out of place. Benicio Del Toro's random stutter played for laughs, useless casino planet scene/chase that felt straight out of the prequels, humor that fell flat on its ass, unearned and predictable Snoke death, forced love interest, etc. STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI is an explosively controversial take on the future of the Star Wars franchise. Viewers have so far referred to it as both the best and the worst film of the franchise. My opinion is precisely that: It has some of the best moments and also some of most obvious flaws of any Star Wars film. But overall, I would rank it.

To a degree, “The Last Jedi” is derivative, too, in that many of its scenes are minor variations on scenes that were in the 1980 “Star Wars” sequel, “The Empire Strikes Back”.

I love Star Wars. I really liked Last Jedi despite its flaws. I don’t really mind the casino scene except for the fact that it only happens because Holdo doesn’t say anything for some reason. What I don’t like is anyone saying that something doesn’t feel like Star Wars.

For those who have seen the movie, the book plays out in pretty much the same fashion. I did enjoy reading the book after seeing the movie. Jason Fry has done a good job of telling the story of the Last Jedi, and his writing style is very good. I highly recommend this fine novelization of The Last Jedi. Taken in isolation, The Last Jedi was a pretty good Rian Johnson movie. It had some pretty good moments, interesting characters, a consistent message, and followed the anti-formula that it set out to follow. The throne room fight was a beautiful samurai fight sequence, the opening a classic WWII bombing run, and the Crait battle a visual.

Discount whatever dopey philosophical drivel us adults pay attention to — the latest Star Wars movies are all about the fighting. Last Jedi, like Rogue One, was big on self-sacrifice for the greater cause. The battle is the big thing. Rogue One was a non-stop series of battle scenes. Last Jedi was full of battles and fights.
